Fertigation Farming of Chilli ~ Dr. Usahawantani's Project of 3 Hectare Land in Jalan Bintulu-Tatau

Last week, part of our group members which is Norhamizah Ezati, Nadia Husna, Amirul Ammar and myself, Iman Ashraf have returned to peninsular during the semester break. So, we take some time which is on 29 December 2016 to do a interview session with one of the farmers who plant chilli fertigation farming systems at Labu, Seremban. We had to interview farmer in peninsular because yet no farmer running fertigation system in Sarawak especially in Bintulu that we can get information.

Mr. Fahirul Razi as an entrepreneur who start practicing this system 5 months ago with his assistance and cooperation of Pertubuhan Peladang Kawasan (PPK) Seremban. The varieties that he choose is Kulai (461) which is high demand of customer. Area of cultivated land is 1 hectare, which can accommodate as many as 4000 polybag. Before the seed is planted, it is first sown in nursery.

The type of Fertigation system that he use is Drip Fertigation that require other equipment such as fertilizer tank, fertilizer solution, polypipe, venturi device, pump, and timer. So, overall cost of this system including herbicides for 1 hectare = 4000 polybag is RM60,000 For first harvesting after planting 4000 polybag, he got a yield of 32 tons of chilli sold at RM2.80 to RM6.50 per kilogram rates by grade into the market around like grocery and wholesalers.

Based on our observation from information that we got from this interview, the cost that we need to start our Fertigation farming is around RM180,000 for 3 hectare land that we buy at KM 34 Jalan Bintulu-Tatau. As assumption, we will get a yield of 96 tons of chilli and the price is set based on their grade then, we will supply it to the market around Bintulu such as grocery store and supermarket including Farley, MDS and Pasar Tamu Bintulu.

GRADE B RM 4.5 PER KG

For your information, we had found a potential customer to buy our chilli regularly which is Sos Cili Udang Sesar Unjur which produce chilli sauce that conducted by Puan Hamidah at Lot 629 Kampung Baru Laut, Bintulu.
